The Autoimmune Protocol and Gut Healing Diet is a stricter version of the Paleo diet with a focus on incorporating gut healing foods such as fermented foods and bone broth. Basically, the diet eliminates any foods that may cause a person inflammation, then after the 30 days you start reintroducing foods one by one and track your body’s reaction to each food. I decided to try this diet after years of feeling exhausted and not receiving relief from my Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis symptoms such as fatigue, bloating, weight gain, and digestive issues. Once I was on medication and my thyroid was stabilized, I continued to have these symptoms. I’ve talked to many endocrinologists about my symptoms and basically each doctor has said most patients with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis don’t ever recover fully from their symptoms. I never thought to question my doctor or look into alternative medicine options, so I learned to live with my symptoms.

Spring cleaning is all about decluttering your home, but what about your mind? Some days I feel so overwhelmed by my own thoughts, and my mind feels cluttered. There should be a larger focus on clearing your mind during this season. Spring is a new start, when flowers begin to bloom and represents a time for regrowth and renewal. During the start of the spring season many people do a detox, spring clean, or begin a new fitness routine. However, cleaning and detoxing your mind is a great way to start this season feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. Below are 5 tips to help you declutter your mind.
St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner! Usually after a day filled with drinking, I wake up feeling bloated, dehydrated, nauseous, and my head hurts. My Luck of the Spinach Smoothie recipe is a great way to restore nutrients to your body and help you relieve hangover symptoms. Even if you don’t have a hangover this smoothie is an amazing way to obtain nutrients your body needs.
In the United States we are exposed to over 80,000 toxins each day. Toxins can wreak havoc on our bodies in many ways including: increasing inflammation in the body, disrupting hormones, and putting us at risk for an autoimmune disease. Some of these toxins are environmental, while other toxins are from our food, beauty routine, and cleaning products. Since I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the thyroid, toxins can cause even more damage to my thyroid. The thyroid is the largest endocrine gland and plays an important role in maintaining energy levels and secreting hormones—among other things. Many beauty products contain toxins that are endocrine disruptors, which have many negative impacts on the body including: increasing production of certain hormones, decreasing production of others, imitating hormones, turning one hormone into another, interfering with hormone signaling, telling cells to die prematurely, competing with essential nutrients, binding to essential hormones, accumulating in organs that produce hormones, and more. Since you apply beauty products directly onto your skin, these harmful toxins go directly into your bloodstream, whereas with consuming food your liver can filter out some of the toxins you ingest. After doing hours and hours of research on Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, the thyroid gland, and the immune system I’ve decided to try to go chemical-free as best I can. Obviously, I can’t control environmental toxins, such as the toxins we are exposed to at a gas station, but I can control my personal care products, cleaning products, and the foods I consume.
Happy National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day! I LOVE peanut butter its so creamy, filling and versatile! I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate, than to post my homemade Cinnamon Raisin Peanut Butter recipe! I love making my own peanut butter because I can control the texture, flavor, and all of the ingredients going into my peanut butter. Making peanut butter from scratch is a lot cheaper than buying store-bought peanut butter and it tastes more flavorful and delicious. Peanut butter tastes great and has many nutrients including: potassium, protein, healthy fats, fiber, antioxidants, magnesium, and more!
Since I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, I get extremely fatigued, so I am always looking for natural ways to increase my energy. Last year I was desperate for a way to boost my energy in the morning, and I started drinking coffee. I was never a regular coffee drinker, not even during long nights of studying in college. I am really sensitive to caffeine and have a really bad reaction to coffee: I get jittery, dizzy, sweaty, and my heart pounds faster. After a few hours of energy, I would crash. I hated feeling dependent on coffee for energy. I’ve changed my diet (which is a blog post for a different day) and decided to go back to drinking tea. However, some days I feel like I need an afternoon jolt of energy. Instead of turning to coffee, I’ve started to practice yoga poses either during my lunch break or I modify the poses for my chair at work.
Recently, I've been experimenting with different smoothie recipes. I love creating new and interesting smoothies for breakfast. Drinking the same smoothie every morning can get very boring. It's great to switch up your smoothie, so your body gets a variety of nutrients. I created an amazing smoothie recipe that tastes delicious and is very nutritious. I love drinking fruit smoothies for breakfast or as a healthy dessert. The natural sugars from the fruit isn't overpoweringly sweet, yet is sweet enough to have as a refreshing and healthy dessert. If you would like to add more sweetness to your dessert smoothie, consider adding 1/4 cup of cocoa powder.
Valentine's Day is right around the corner! This Valentine's Day focus on practicing self-love regardless of your relationship status. The most important relationship you have is with yourself. How can you love someone else and be in a healthy relationship, if you don't love yourself first? You can't rely on someone else for your happiness, true and lasting happiness comes from within. I believe that until we love ourselves unconditionally, we will end up in unhealthy relationships, constantly seeking validation and a source of happiness and love from our partner.
Over the past few years my hair has become more and more knotty after I shower. I tried using so many different types of shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and hair detanglers. All of the products I was using made my hair really dry. My hair wasn't healthy because I was using products with so many different types of chemicals. I wanted to use something more natural and decided to make my own hair detangler. I knew I wanted to use apple cider vinegar as the base, because I'm slightly obsessed with the healing and therapeutic properties of apple cider vinegar. However, I didn't want to smell like apple cider vinegar, so my recipe has a few essential oils that smell great and have amazing benefits for your hair.
I have a smoothie almost every single day for breakfast. I love drinking smoothies because they are yummy, quick and easy to make, and keep me energized and satisfied. Since I don’t eat dairy, grains, or meat, smoothies are a great meal replacement. Smoothies are easily dairy-free by using tea or non-dairy milk such as coconut or almond milk. It's easy to make your smoothie naturally creamy, by using fruits and vegetables such as bananas, avocados, and mangoes. I love using tea as a base for my smoothies because it adds even more health benefits to my smoothie!
