In the United States we are exposed to over 80,000 toxins each day. Toxins can wreak havoc on our bodies in many ways including: increasing inflammation in the body, disrupting hormones, and putting us at risk for an autoimmune disease. Some of these toxins are environmental, while other toxins are from our food, beauty routine, and cleaning products. Since I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the thyroid, toxins can cause even more damage to my thyroid. The thyroid is the largest endocrine gland and plays an important role in maintaining energy levels and secreting hormones—among other things. Many beauty products contain toxins that are endocrine disruptors, which have many negative impacts on the body including: increasing production of certain hormones, decreasing production of others, imitating hormones, turning one hormone into another, interfering with hormone signaling, telling cells to die prematurely, competing with essential nutrients, binding to essential hormones, accumulating in organs that produce hormones, and more. Since you apply beauty products directly onto your skin, these harmful toxins go directly into your bloodstream, whereas with consuming food your liver can filter out some of the toxins you ingest. After doing hours and hours of research on Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, the thyroid gland, and the immune system I’ve decided to try to go chemical-free as best I can. Obviously, I can’t control environmental toxins, such as the toxins we are exposed to at a gas station, but I can control my personal care products, cleaning products, and the foods I consume. Over the past few weeks I have been transitioning my personal care products to all-natural products I make myself. So I make my own shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, hand cream, face cream, and toner. I am still experimenting with the perfect shampoo and conditioner. However, my face cream and toner are amazing! I already see a huge improvement with my skin: I have less breakouts, my skin is softer, and my skin tone has improved. I wanted to transition my entire beauty and skincare routine, which includes my eye makeup remover. I’ve had many different makeup removers that have over 10 ingredients in them, and most of them I can’t pronounce. I started using coconut oil as a makeup remover and it is amazing! Since coconut oil solidifies at room temperature, I put a tiny bit of coconut oil in-between my fingers to warm it up and melt it, then I put the melted coconut oil on a cotton ball and rub off the makeup on my eyelids. Coconut oil removes water-proof eye makeup completely and quickly! It’s so simple, smells amazing, and it’s all-natural! Note: avoid getting the coconut oil in your eyes, and only use for eye makeup. Coconut oil will clog your pores and can cause breakouts if you apply it all over your face. Do you have any DIY make up removers? Please share below!
