Three Reasons to Switch to Sustainable and Natural Feminine Care Products and the Options Available6/8/2017 There are many benefits to switching from tampons and pads to more sustainable and natural feminine care products. Some of the benefits include: reduced exposure to harmful toxins and chemicals, reducing your contributions to dangerous landfill waste, and lower costs. Tampons and pads are the most popular feminine care products, but there are many alternative products that are better for your health, wallet, and the environment.
Since I was in my early teens I’ve always loved make up. For a long time I subscribed to ipsy and birchbox, and have made many retail therapy trips to Sephora. I had SO much makeup, most of it was unopened. However, there were a few key products that I always used like eyeshadow, mascara, foundation, blush, bronzer, eyebrow powder, lip stains, and lipsticks. I was a makeup snob and only bought high-end makeup. I was shocked when I found out these high-end brands use toxic ingredients in their products. I always thought that since they were expensive, they contained high quality ingredients and weren’t harmful. After going through my makeup I was horrified by the harmful chemicals I was exposed to during my beauty routine. In the United States we are exposed to over 80,000 toxins each day, many of these toxins are from our personal care products. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), "Personal care products are manufactured with 10,500 unique chemical ingredients, some of which are known or suspected carcinogens, toxic to the reproductive system or known to disrupt the endocrine system. Though some companies make products that are safe to eat, others choose to use dangerous ingredients like coal tar and formaldehyde, both human carcinogens, and lead acetate, a developmental toxin." - EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. Toxins found in beauty products can wreak havoc on our bodies in many ways including: increasing inflammation in the body, disrupting hormones, and putting us at risk for an autoimmune disease or other diseases.
I love the weather, energy, and vibrancy of the summer! I feel like the summer flies by, and I never accomplish anything I set out to do. This year I decided to make a goals list for this summer. I love making lists, I always feel accountable and more motivated to accomplish my goals. Below are my 5 goals for this summer!
My 5 Goals for This Summer
Last week I reintroduced yogurt into my diet! I really loved the yogurt I had while on my yoga teacher training at Kripalu, it was unlike any yogurt I've ever tasted. The yogurt was so creamy, naturally sweet, and fresh. I called Kripalu and found out their yogurt supplier, which is Butterworks Farms, click the link to see if they serve yogurt in your area. I would definitely recommend getting their yogurt! However, Butterworks Farms doesn't serve yogurt near me, so I decided I would get yogurt from the local farmers market. I found a yogurt made by Hawthorne Valley Farm and the taste and texture are very similar to Butterworks Farms! If neither of these yogurt suppliers serve your area, check your local farmers markets and ask for old-fashioned yogurt!
While on the Autoimmune Reset and Gut Healing diet I’ve been missing the crunchiness and saltiness of chips. There aren’t a lot of easy and exciting snack options for this diet, so I’m always brainstorming new and interesting snack ideas. Kale chips are fun to eat and a great way to satisfy my salty and crunchy cravings! I really love making kale chips they are so easy, quick, and taste yummy!
Sweet potato fries have become a staple in my 30 day Autoimmune and Gut Healing diet, I make them at least once a week. I love making sweet potato fries because they are delicious, easy to make, and are great leftovers. Sweet potato fries are very versatile, I can have them as a snack or as a side dish.
For the past few months I’ve been exploring the local farmers market and making connections with local farmers. A few weeks ago at the farmers market, one of the farmers gave me some free ginger to try. The ginger tasted fresh, vibrant, and amazing! I had a lot of fresh ginger and thought of the different ways to incorporate it in my diet. I decided to put ginger in my morning smoothies and to create a ginger and lemon tea. I love drinking tea, and I really loved the health benefits I received from drinking the ginger lemon tea. It was a great sweet treat at night! Lemon-ginger tea is an infusion of lemon juice and ginger root rather than a true tea, but either way my body feels amazing after drinking it. I love drinking ginger and lemon tea because it tastes great, is packed with numerous health benefits, and satisfies my sweet cravings. Below are 5 health benefits you receive from drinking ginger lemon tea.
I’ve tried many store bought toners and none of them worked well with my skin. These toners always caused blemishes, dryness, or irritation. They also contain a lot of harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances. My facial toner was the first skincare product I started making, and it was before I learned about the negative effects of chemicals and synthetic fragrances. I began making my own toner, because my skin didn’t respond well to store bought toners.
I’m always looking to experiment with new and interesting recipes that follow my Autoimmune Reset and Gut Healing Diet. It’s finally starting to warm up, and one of my favorite things to eat during the spring and summer are tacos! One warm night last week I was really craving shrimp, but I didn’t want to just eat shrimp with a bowl of vegetables. So I created an autoimmune reset and gut healing version of tacos, and they were amazing! The cilantro and lime add so much flavor, I wasn’t even missing the tortilla! These tacos are fun, filling, and flavorful!
